Happy
2013 everyone! Quick update.
.
You
may have noticed that we did not hold an annual
fundraiser in 2012
..Blake & I have
twin 16 year-old girls. For those of you with
teenagers, you know what that means: college
planning and visits, numerous high school
activities, community service projects, etc.
For those of you with young children or no
children - I can only say "wow!".
I truly believed my life would become less
hectic as they got older
.boy was I wrong
.
Planning
and executing successful fundraisers takes
an inordinate amount of time and energy. With
only a year and a half left with the girls
under our roof, I made the very difficult
decision last year to focus on their needs
and spending time with them before they head
off to college. The way I look at it, when
the girls leave for in the Fall of 2014 I
will have more than enough time and energy
to plan several fundraisers - and will be
looking for activities to distract me from
my too quiet home.
We
hope you all understand our choice to continue
to make the girls and our family our first
priority by taking a break from the fundraising
aspect of Share A Smile for a couple of years.
In the meantime, we will gladly accept your
donations, as we consistently receive applications
and continue to treat children in need of
our services.
Thank
you!

& Blake

For
80 years the Gittings studios have been synonymous with
exceptional portraiture. Gittings has photographed many
U.S. presidents, world leaders and sports legends. Their
professional photographers have captured beautiful memories
for numerous families over the years. We recently had
Avery & Channing photographed and were amazed at
how beautiful the photos turned out. We had such a difficult
time deciding which portraits to purchase!
Remember, this is for the month of October ONLY, and
ALL proceeds from every Imperial Portrait Package
purchased in October will be donated to Share
A Smile TM
®. This means you
get a fantastic deal on a beautiful portrait of your
family AND every penny of your $300 goes directly to
help a child in need of treatment and/or surgery for
vascular malformations!
Please see the postcard above for specific details about
this very generous offer as well as about our Kick-Off
Cocktail celebration to be held Oct. 2nd
at the Gittings studio across from the Dallas Galleria.

5th Annual Share
A Smile FoundationTM
® Polo Match Fundraiser
Our
5th Annual Share
A Smile FoundationTM
®
Polo Match Fundraiser was held on Saturday, June
14th at the Las Colinas Polo Club. The event
was a success, with over 200 guests in attendance to
enjoy the afternoon of polo, music and fundraising!
Our special guest MC, WFAA Channel 8 news reporter
Steve Stoler, was on hand to welcome all of the
guests as well as conduct our exciting silent auction
for the gorgeous David Yurman bracelet. Steve
brought along is beautiful wife, Susan, and their
2 handsome sons, Jake & Jordan, to celebrate
Father's Day with him.
We
were very fortunate to have Dr. John Burns and
his beautiful wife, Ann, join us for the event
as well as two of our favorite patients and their families:
Austin and Logan.
Share
A Smile TM
®would
not be successful in changing the lives of children
without the generosity of doctors such as Dr. John
Burns. We are eternally grateful for his willingness
to donate his time and talent for children in need.
It
was absolutely wonderful to visit with Austin
and his loving family again this year and to see what
a beautiful little boy he has become (he is definitely
no longer a baby!). Austin's father, Alex, took
a few minutes to express his gratitude and share with
guests how Share
A Smile TM
®
has impacted their family. His words were very heartfelt
and sincere, touching the hearts of all those in attendance.
Additionally,
we have Alex to thank for the donation of our
beautiful silent auction item: he is a manager at David
Yurman jewelry at Northpark Center in Dallas!
As
fate would have it, Logan and his father, Matt,
were in town the weekend of our event (from Guatemala)
for an appointment with Dr. Jay Burns. Not only
were we able to meet Logan & his dad, but
also his grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins! All
were extremely gracious & very nice - we look forward
to seeing them again next year, and hopefully meeting
Logan's mom and siblings.
Our
½ time champagne divot stomp sponsored by St.
Michelle Wine Estates, Republic National Beverage Company
& Bentley Dallas was a huge hit. Chris
from Bentley brought out a beautiful convertible
Bentley to serve the bubbly from - and even gave
a few lucky guests rides around the field!
Tony
from Leblon was much appreciated as he served
up delicious & refreshing caipirinhas. If
you've never tried one, you are missing out on a fabulous
tasty treat! p.s. Congrats to Tony and his wife who
are expecting triplet boys!
Shields
Steel bands from Shield Elementary School in Red Oak
amazed everyone with their talent on the steel drums.
Their music put everyone in the "island" mood!
Thank you to their teacher Diane, her husband
Bob, and every student who gave up their
Saturday to donate their time and talent for our event!
An
unexpected treat was the Luxury Boy Toys tour
bus driven out by our always fun-loving Carlton. Carlton
handed out t-shirts and made the air conditioned luxury
bus available for those who needed a break from the
afternoon heat. Thank you!
Extra
special thank you's to our fabulous volunteers who support
Share
A Smile TM

each and every year by donating their precious weekend
hours to work at our event. We couldn't do it without
you!!

Foundation Polo Match Fundraiser. Though we consider
the fundraiser to have been a success, we anticipate
charitable donations will decrease as the economy continues
to suffer. Unfortunately, the poor economy not only
affects donors, it affects our applicant families as
well: as families struggle financially, lose jobs, etc.,
we anticipate an increase in requests for assistance
from Share
A Smile TM
®.
Please keep us in mind when considering which charitable
organization you would like to contribute to. Remember:
we are the only organization in the United States that
provides this type of treatment/assistance to children.

Hole-in-One Putting Contest/HUMMER Giveaway at Vineyards
Antique and New Vintage Mall, 4817 W. Park Blvd.,
Plano (NE corner Park/Preston): Well,
we tried again but we just couldn't give away the H3
from Sewell HUMMER! Our 2 qualifiers, Alan Hardin &
Tim did their best to drive away in that brand new H3
but just couldn't do it this year! Tim, our finalist,
seemed to take it all in stride although those of us
watching were on pins & needles. We were rooting
for you Tim! Ed, our finalist from last years event,
decided not to attend this year after trying to convince
us for the last 12 months that he would be the 2006
winner
cold feet Ed? Hopefully, Al, Tim
and Ed will be back in 2007 and ONE OF THEM will drive
away in the H3! Start practicing your putting now guys
after
all, it was JUST a 60 foot putt. The afternoon was fun
and exciting with approximately $1400 raised again this
year. Thanks to all who came out in support of Share

Sunday, Father's Day, June 18th:
3rd Annual Share
A Smile FoundationTM
® Polo
Match, "Father's - Tied & True". Our
3rd Share
A Smile FoundationTM
®
Polo Match was the best yet! We had over 300 people
in attendance and, thanks to many of you out there,
were able to raise approximately $25,000 that will be
used to treat children with vascular malformations!
Although the thunderstorms that went rumbling through
the area the night before gave us a bit of a scare,
the weather on Sunday turned out to be warm & sunny
- perfect for a polo match! It was definitely a relaxed
& fun party atmosphere with everyone thoroughly
enjoying the beautiful live music from Nomads while
socializing with friends and family. Two Rows did an
outstanding job with the delicious fajita feast and
the frozen margaritas were a welcome treat on such a
warm day.
The
tie contest was a highlight of the evening, with every
father donning a tie gathered and given a mai-tai to
sip while while the finalists in each category were
judged. The winner in each category was given an award
along with a delicious jar of "Daddy Q's Barbecue
Sauce" made right here in Texas! Start collecting
those old ties now - you may need them for next years
contest
.competition is sure to be neck &
neck again in 2007
.
In
addition to our friends & family who came out to
support Share
A Smile FoundationTM
®,
there were several new faces in attendance, including
two of the kiddos Share
A Smile FoundationTM
®is
sponsoring at this time: Carson & Frances. We feel
fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet these
beautiful children and their families, as well as allow
them to experience first-hand how many caring, generous
people there are out there. We were also very honored
to have Dr. John Burns, his wife Ann and their 2 little
boys, Jack & newborn David, with us this year.
BIG
thanks go to all of our volunteers - we say it every
year, after every event because it's true: we couldn't
have done it without each and every one of you! Heartfelt
thanks also to our very generous Underwriter - Compass
Bank, and our major sponsors: The Combined Group,
JB Collins & Associates, & W.R. Starkey.
Major donors for this event were Republic Beverage
(all of the wine served at the event), Heineken USA
(all of the beer served), Kevin Mokarow of Mokarow
Farms (tequila for the margaritas), Barefoot
Wine (champagne for the divot stomp) Vi Barrett
of the Starbucks store at Legacy & The Tollroad
in Plano (coffee & iced tea) and of course,
Nomads band & Two Rows Catering. Additionally,
companies & individuals who generously donated all
of the great items and services for our silent auction
& raffle made it possible for funds to be raised.
Again, each of you played a very important part in the
success of the event - thank you!

| Father's
Day Extravaganza
If
you didn't get a chance to make it to the Father's Day
Extravaganza held on June 18th at Ruggeri's Restaurant
and Vineyards Antique & New Mall in Plano,
you missed an exciting time! Sewell HUMMER of Plano
generously donated a brand new HUMMER H3 to be
given away in a putting contest. The winner had to make
a 70 foot hole in one.
Throughout
the day, many hopeful guests made attempts to qualify
for the final chance to putt for the H3. Scott McVeigh
of Plano was our very first qualifier of the day, followed
by John Logan of Denton & Ed Lopez
of Dallas. The excitement in the air was palpable -
the noise level went from being so quiet you could hear
a pin drop one moment, to screaming & raucous conversation
the next. At 5:00 the final round for the one chance
to putt began, with Ed Lopez being "the
man"! Ed's final 70 foot putt was beautiful..
unfortunately,
he missed making the "hole in one" by an inch
and a half!!! We're not sure who was more disappointed:
Ed or his daughter Leslie, who had been trying all day
to convince her dad to win the H3 for her! Ed is still
talking about "the one that got away"
..(don't
worry Ed, we do have the whole thing on tape if anyone
is interested in reliving the moment).
Ed
did get to walk away with 4 Passbooks to play at
area golf courses - each worth $1200, courtesy of
AvidGolfer Magazine - so he can practice for
next year's event
..
In
addition to the putting contest, special gifts chosen
just for dad were raffled off each and every ½
hour throughout the day, and ice-cold beverages were
served alongside delicious pasta from Ruggeri's.
All proceeds from the raffle, the bar & the putting
contest were donated to the Share
A Smile FoundationTM
®. Close to $1400
was raised, and just as importantly, we were able to
introduce people to Share
A SmileTM
® and our mission.
Thanks to all who came out to the event in support of
Share
A SmileTM
®!
A
heartfelt thanks to our volunteers of the day: Susan
Blue, Chris & Stephen Davisson, Carol
Rennesund & Alison Santa Maria, who did
everything from sell raffle tickets, to register golfers
for the putting contest and man the bar - we appreciate
each of you!

2nd Annual Polo Match!
The 2nd

A Smile FoundationTM
® Polo Match, held on Mother's Day,
May 8th, was a huge success! Our goal was to double our attendance
- and we did! Although it was windy, the rain held off and
the afternoon turned out beautifully, allowing everyone in
attendance to relax, watch the exciting polo match, and socialize!
"The Incredibles" bounce house was definitely a
big hit with the kiddos, and the mom's looked radiant wearing
their orchid corsages. Dr. Jay Burns & his wife, Ginny,
were honored guests, as were Dr. John Burns, his wife Ann
and their young son. Additionally, we had the joy of meeting
Austin, one of the patients Share

his gracious, beautiful family!
Congratulations
to our raffle & silent auction winners - ya'll won some
great prizes! A BIG thank you goes out to our volunteers who

the Las Colinas Polo Club. A special thank you goes to all
of the volunteers who did everything from manning tables,
to pouring drinks and painting faces! Your generosity was
instrumental in making our first major fundraising event a
huge success! During this one event we raised enough funds
for treatments of up to 3 Foundation children.
We hope those of you who attended enjoyed yourselves as much
as we did - we loved spending time with old friends and were
excited to get to know some new faces as well. Approximately
100 people attended this years match - a great turnout for
a first year event. Our goal is to double that number for
2005, so we plan to see all of you out there stomping those
divots again next year, along with several of your friends!

Experience
with disfigurement benefits others
Dallas Morning News, November 22, 2004
SOLT/DMN
Because of a malformation that took several surgical procedures
to repair on daughter Channing's (center) nose, Blake and
Holly Stock created the Share
A Smile Foundation
TM
®
so that they might help others facing similar situations.
Blake and Holly Stock know firsthand how mean people can be
when a loved one has a facial disfigurement.
Channing,
one of the Plano couple's twins, had a red, bulbous malformation
on her nose when she was a toddler. She remained oblivious
to her disfigurement because she was too young to fully understand
the condition.
"She was not really experiencing anything other than
out in public people would come up sometimes and ask, 'What
is that on your nose?' " Ms. Stock said. "They could
be very cruel. Actually, I think it bothered us more than
it did her because she was so young."
As an infant, Channing had a red-colored speck on the tip
of her nose, which was diagnosed as nasal tip hemangioma.
However, the hemangioma grew rapidly.
"As a parent, that's hard to deal with when a little
stain started to grow larger and culminated to be almost the
size of a golf ball on the nose," Mr. Stock said.
Channing
underwent two laser surgeries to lessen the discoloration
of her disfigurement. However, it continued to grow, and she
had surgery when she was 3. Within the following year, the
hemangioma continued to grow and was reclassified as a venous
malformation, in which the veins are abnormally large.
Mr. Stock
described it as "veins that go awry." A venous malformation
results when the vessels that transport blood do not develop
properly before birth.
At age
4, Channing underwent a second, more invasive surgery to treat
the malformation. Her nose healed well. The only trace of
her malformation today is a small pink area on her nose.
Foundation
started
While Channing
is now a healthy 8-year-old, her situation motivated her parents
to help others who may not be as fortunate because of financial
reasons to repair or remove facial malformations.
The opportunity
presented itself in fall 2002 when Mr. Stock, who is the chief
executive officer of The Combined Group, was trying to identify
a charitable cause he and his colleagues could support.
The couple's
experience in treating their daughter's disfigurement inspired
the creation of the Share
A Smile Foundation
TM
®,
a charitable cause the company and the community could help.
As part
of establishing the foundation, the couple turned to Dr.
A. Jay Burns, who had provided Channing's medical treatment
since she was 3 months old. Dr. Burns is the director
and founder of The Fogelson Plastic & Craniofacial
Surgery Center for Children, which is affiliated with
Children's Medical Center Dallas.
Dr.
Burns agreed to provide his services for free for children
who are sponsored by the foundation. And Children's Medical
Center agreed to provide its services at a discounted
rate.
Since it
was formed, the nonprofit foundation has raised $50,000 through
fund-raisers and contributions. Some of the funds have been
used to treat the foundation's first three recipients. The
foundation only sponsors children who have at least one working
parent who doesn't have insurance or qualify for Medicaid
or CHIP.
Running
the organization also has become a full-time job for Ms. Stock,
which she enjoys. She runs the organization from the family's
house.
Raising
awareness
One of
the couple's main goals is to identify more children who may
qualify for financial help from the foundation. Currently,
the foundation doesn't have a list of additional candidates
who can be helped. The couple are trying to raise awareness
and help people realize they can get assistance for their
children who have facial malformations.
"We
have an opportunity to make a difference," Ms. Stock
said. "I can't imagine how different Channing's life
would be without the treatment."
Mr. Stock
describes the foundation's efforts as a "labor of love."
"It
keeps me going knowing that my wife has a huge, loving heart
who wants to help children," he said. "If we can
raise funds in order to do that, then it's fulfilling for
her and helpful to children."
