Blake and Holly Stock started the Share
A Smile Foundation TM
® in the fall of 2002, with the assistance
of Dr. A. Jay Burns and his staff at The Fogelson Plastic & Craniofacial
Surgery Center for Children, and Children's Medical Center of Dallas.
The objective of the Share A Smile Foundation
TM ® is to provide financial support to children
requiring plastic surgery and/or medical treatments to repair or remove
vascular anomalies, but whose families are not financially able to
pay for this service. The Share A Smile
Foundation TM ®
provides assistance to children whose parents work but whose families
do not have insurance coverage or qualify for Medicaid/CHIPS. There
is a formal application process to determine eligibility. Dr. Burns
has offered to forego his compensation for each of the children sponsored
by the Foundation; however, there are hospital and other medical expenses
(provided at a discounted rate by Children's Medical Center of Dallas)
that need to be covered as well, such as anesthesia.
Vascular anomalies are a familiar subject for Blake and Holly. One
of their twin daughters, Channing, was diagnosed with a nasal tip
hemangioma as an infant. When Channing was three months old, her pediatrician
referred the family to Dr. Burns. He began treatment on her immediately
due to the extremely rapid growth, prescribing low dose steroids.
The goal was to shrink the growth, either to prepare the site for
surgery or, if possible, to have the growth disappear completely.
The Stock's worked closely with Dr. Burns, recognizing that the long-term
goal was to have no noticeable hemangioma by the time Channing entered
Kindergarten. Channing remained on the medication for a year, and
also had 2 laser treatments to lessen the discoloration. The steroids
helped control the size of the malformation, but it still remained
an obvious disfigurement, drawing comments from strangers on a regular
basis. At age three years, with the malformation showing no indication
of disappearing, and, in fact appearing to enlarge, Channing underwent
her first surgery. The surgery went successfully and the nose healed
well, however, within the following year, the hemangioma began to
grow again. At this point, the malformation was reclassified as a
vascular (venous) malformation (hemangiomas do not generally continue
to grow nor do they grow back after being removed). Channing underwent
a second, more invasive surgery at age four. Although there was no
additional abnormal tissue found, Dr. Burns removed more nasal tissue
during this surgery. Channing's nose healed well - no scarring, no
swelling and just a small area of slight discoloration (pink). Channing
is now 13 years old and a happy, well-adjusted, beautiful little girl!
In fact, most people are shocked to learn of her previous vascular
malformation.
Blake and Holly, along with Channing and her sister Avery, became
very close to Dr. Burns and his staff over the term of the treatment.
Although Channing has been officially released from Dr. Burns care,
the family has kept in close contact with him and his staff. Therefore,
when the idea of a charitable foundation was considered, Dr. Burns
and his invaluable work immediately came to mind.
The Stock's feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity and the
financial means to have Channing treated successfully by Dr. Burns,
but realize that not every family has the same options.

so check back often for updates on the children we are sponsoring
for treatment as well as for info on upcoming events.
You
can make a difference in a child's life,
not only in the way others see them,
but in how they will see themselves for years to come. |
